After this week’s little adventure in digital duplication, I’ve been thinking about what “real” even means anymore. And I’ve landed here: Authenticity isn’t just personal branding. It’s protection from turning performative.
Somewhere between “executive presence” and “personal brand,” we started mistaking polish for power.
We rehearse introductions like product demos.
We sanitize our stories until they sound like company policy.
And then we wonder why it all feels flat.
Because when everyone’s performing “realness,” no one’s actually being real.
Authenticity isn’t a style, it’s a skill.
And in a professional world built on metrics, optics, and perfectly optimized personas, it’s the rarest one you can have.
Because no one (and I mean NO ONE) can outperform you at being you.
That’s not branding. That’s strategy.
Nietzsche said, “Become who you are.”
Turns out that’s the most efficient professional development plan ever written! It’s also the backbone of the SNAK framework (if your new here, I do this all the time):
-Your SKILLS sharpen when they’re grounded in truth.
-Your NETWORK grows when people meet the real you.
-Your ACTIVITIES sustain you when they’re authentic, not obligatory.
-And your KNOWLEDGE becomes wisdom when it’s lived, not recited.
So next time you’re tempted to over-edit yourself into perfection, DON’T.
You’re not here to compete with your clone.
You’re here to become who you already are.
When did authenticity give you an unexpected win at work—big or small?
Drop your story in the comments. Let’s celebrate the unpolished victories!!!
