Behind our calendars packed with meetings, our inboxes brimming with urgency, and our project timelines shifting like tectonic plates there’s a quieter truth.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! We are not “behind.” We are becoming. All of us. Always.
And in a world that never stops changing, never stops challenging us, that is everything.
The Lie of being “Behind”
If you’ve worked in corporate Learning or HR long enough, you’ve likely heard someone whisper (or shout) the dreaded phrase: “We’re behind.” Behind on training. Behind on adoption. Behind on trends. Behind on AI.
It’s a phrase rooted in comparison. But comparison isn’t strategy, it’s noise. Here’s the truth “seasoned” professionals know… Development is not linear, and it’s not a race.
It’s cyclical, spiral-shaped, adaptive, and beautifully human. The most valuable growth rarely happens on a neatly tracked Gantt chart. It emerges in the friction; when someone dares to ask “why” in a meeting, or when a mid-level manager has a lightbulb moment in a feedback loop.
So, let’s pause the doomsday clock. Because time is, in fact, a construct.
Bending Time in L&D (No Flux Capacitor Needed)
In the project management world, we talk about lead time, lag time, and critical paths. But in the human world—the L&D world—we also talk about readiness, confidence, and curiosity. These aren’t found in a spreadsheet. But they are what actually move people forward.
If you want to accelerate development, don’t compress the timeline. Expand the agency. Give people the tools to own their learning, and suddenly time becomes elastic. When someone feels empowered to choose what they learn and when, they become time travelers skipping past hesitation, rewinding mistakes, and fast-forwarding toward mastery.
Want to speed up transformation? Start by letting learners know they’re not “late.” They’re right on time, and exactly where they are supposed to be.
UR a Limited Edition: Now Act Like It!
There has never been another version of you in this workplace, in this economy, at this exact moment. You bring a pattern of insight, experience, curiosity, and resilience that no AI model or training program can replicate. And that uniqueness? That’s your advantage.
In a world saturated with sameness, being a limited edition is the most strategic edge you have. So why do so many professionals wait to be “picked” for development? Why do they hope someone else will sponsor their learning, plan their growth, or tell them when it’s their time? Your development isn’t waiting on permission. It’s waiting on intention.
A Better Plan for Professional Growth
As someone who has spent years helping organizations build learning systems, performance feedback loops, and strategic workforce plans, I’ll tell you this:
You can treat your professional development like a project—with goals, phases, dependencies, and milestones. But if you do, remember to add a line item for:
- Time to reflect
- Space to experiment
- Grace when you’re growing unseen
These “soft” entries? They’re the make-or-break differentiators. Because transformation rarely shows up as a calendar invite. It shows up as an idea you can’t shake. A question you finally ask. A story that makes you feel less alone.
And if you’re not sure where to begin, I often guide folks through a framework I use in workshops: SNAK—focusing on your Skills, Networks, Activities, and Knowledge. It’s a deceptively simple way to map not just what you need to develop, but who you already are. It’s not about checking boxes. It’s about building a professional identity that feels whole—and wholly yours. BECAUSE…
- You are not too late
- You are not too old
- You are not behind
- You are becoming. So is everyone else.
And if you need a mantra to return to when the noise creeps in, here it is etched across stars, and tucked into the corners of your workday:

Now go build the version of you that only you can build. Because the world doesn’t need another replica. It needs you!
